Niue language week 2020

 WALT: understand Niue language week

What is Niue language week about?

Niue Language Week provides an opportunity for students to learn, speak, and celebrate the indigenous language of Niue, through language, song, dance, cultural displays, and community events. Niue Language Week helps all New Zealander's journey towards shared cultural understanding.

Why is it important?

Niuean is a Polynesian language, belonging to the Malayo-Polynesian subgroup of the Austronesian languages. It is most closely related to Tongan and slightly more distantly to other Polynesian languages such as Māori, Samoan, and Hawaiian. Together, Tongan and Niuean form the Tongic subgroup of the Polynesian languages. Niuean also has a number of influences from Samoan and Eastern Polynesian languages.

Give three Niue words you know?

1.Fakamolemole / Please

2. Fakaue / Thank You

3. Malolo Nakai a Koe / How Are You?

When a earthquake happens

WALT: practice what to do when an earthquake happens

What we did:

Today on October the 15th Ahipara school did an earthquake drill. We practiced the Drop, Cover, and Hold things in our class. We had to stay under our desks for a minute then try again after a few practices we heard the bell ring which means there's an earthquake drill. Then the whole school walked up on the field with our teachers and the roll. While we were sitting in our class lines our principal talked to us about how good we did and what we would have done if there was a real earthquake.

I found it easy to get under my desk. I found it hard to get under my desk quickly. I really enjoyed learning about what to do when there's an earthquake. Next time I need to move faster just in case there's a real one.

How to survive an earthquake:

When there's ever an earthquake you always got to get under a hard table, curl up into a ball, hold your neck and head, as well as your desk it's all, called drop, cover, and hold. But when your outside but also close to a doorway you could sit right under it, covering your neck and head.

Mapere planting

WALT: write about our Mapere planting experience

On Tuesday, Rooms 5, 7 and 11 walked to Mapere to plant Spinifex and Flax. We went to Mapere to try and help our environment and the dune restoration program. We planted Spinifex to stop erosion. But first, we had to get in a group of four with an adult then we had to get two spades, some plants, and some tablets. It was really cool but it was also really painful for our eyes because it was windy the sand kept getting in our eyes. But the best thing was having a sausage sizzle with everyone else. All together we planted 750 plants which was amazing. Next time I need to take more water and a hat. Here are some photos of us!

Persuasive argument writing

WALT: Write 100 words in 10 minutes.
All children should do homework every night

Do you think children should do homework every night?

Firstly I think that children should not do homework every night.

For this reason, I think children should not do homework because kids go to school from Monday to Friday,5 days of school.

And thirdly, we go to school to learn from 8:45 to 2:45 and that is 7 hours long and we don't need extra work.

The main thing is to not get homework because we don't need extra work because we´ve been at school for 7 hours.

Thank you for listening!.

Spending the day with Pete delete

On Tuesday we were lucky enough because room 5 had 3 special visitors and their names were Pete, Karan, and Gracie the dog. Pete showed us how to write a poem, his carvings, 2 or 3 big blown glass and Hu.
Hu is a big frog that Pete made and he's got a big heart. Pete also made this box shaped like a heart that has a little hole that you look through and all you could see is just lights and it looked like it will never end.
I also wrote my poem here it is:

Promise me you will remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think!.
